Chestnuts

Sondrio and the surrounding towns are located at the ideal elevation for picking chestnuts.

When fall comes it brings with it the typical morning breeze and new shades of red and gold. This is not just the time of the new colours, but also of the season delicacy: chestnuts. They are easy to find and pick and are a good excuse to take a stroll in the woods. There's no need to go too deep into the woods nor climbing trees:  when it's ripe, this delicious fruit falls on the ground.
Chestnuts are wrapped in a thorny burr that protects them, but with a little attention it's possible to take them out without hurting oneself. Walking in the woods while searching for chestnuts is a simple and funny activity, to be done with children, who will doubtless be amazed by the colours of fall and the cracking sound of leaves that break under the passing of the small feets, eager to find chestnuts to taste at home.
