Church of St. Anthony

The district of Vassalini has always been the most popolous of Chiesa. Its demographic and economic power led to the rise of separatist ideals. Over the 17th century the inhabitants built a church of their own. Founded in 1667, the church of Saint Anthony is also dedicated to Saint Stepehen. It is said that- in bright days, on December 26th during the Mass celebrated at 10:30 AM - a sunray illuminates the paiting portraying Saint Anthony above the altar. The facade of the church, simple and elegant, is enriched by a beatiful portal carved  in 1704 by Francesco Solaro, while the door (1705) is the work of Bartolomeo Fanoni, born in Primolo. The church houses several remarkable works of art, such as: on the right wall, a confessional and a pulpit skilfully carved by Andrea Rinaldi (1778) the altarpiece portrays Saint Anthony kneeled before the Child and cherubs by Bartolomeo Gualtieri. the tabernacle in gilded and painted wood, in the shape of a temple, carved by Bartolomeo Fanoni. in the sacristy, a wooden statue of Our Lady of the milk enthroned that dates back to the end of the 15th - beginning of the 16th century. This statue, turned into Our Lady of Mount Carmel by adding a mantle, is displayed in May.

Church of Saint Elizabeth

The Church of Saint Elizabeth in Caspoggio was built in the area of Pantanaccio between 1719 and 1721. There probably was a small chapel, since a date (1624) was found on the inner wall of the facade. The fresco in the apse portrays on the background a tiny chapel close to a stable. Since Pantanaccio is quite far from Caspoggio, it is likely that the inhabitants of this small settlement had already built a chapel in the past. The architectural structure is particularly interesting because of the pentagonal shape of the apse and the unusual L shaped bell tower. A porch built in the 60s has heavily affected the original architecture. A beautiful fresco in the apse portrays the Meeting of Mary with Elizabeth, which dates back to the early 18th Century. During the first half of the 20th Century the artist Erminio Dioli from Caspoggio retouched or introduced new features: the altarpiece, the tabernacle and the antependium.  Dioli also painted the vault of the presbytery.

Church of Saint Emily

This small church was built at Giuseppe Sampietro's initiative, to welcome the clients and the personnel of the  prestigious Grand Hotel Malenco. In memory of his first wife -  Emilia - the church was dedicated to Saint Emilia, martyred on June 2nd 177 in Lyon, under Emperor Marcus Aurelius.  The designer of the building and author of the paintings, carvings and decorations was the artist Erminio Dioli. The central altarpiece (1931) portrays Saint Emily with the halo while holding a palm (symbol of victory) among clouds and cherubs. In the tabernacle door, is carved a chalice and, on top of it, there is the holy bread with the monogram I.H.S. (Jesus Hominum Salvator). The barrel vault ceiling and the walls are decorated with cherubs and garlands. The small window above the entrance portrays Mary with her hands joined and the writing Ave Maria gratia plena.

Parish church of St James and St Philip

The ancient Church dedicated to Saint James was built by the Capitanei family around the 11th Century, most likely in the wake of the raising popularity of pilgrimages from the Northern regions towards Saint James of Compostela. The church was a rest area for those who walked along the path leading to the Muretto pass.During the 14th century it was dedicated both to Saint James and Saint Philippe. Following the Protestant reformation, an Evangelic community formed in Chiesa. They became very influential from a political and social point of view. For several years, the Church dedicated to Saint James and Philippe had to be shared with the Protestant community. In 1557 the government of the Three leagues forced the local communities to cede a temple to the Protestants. Where there was just one church, Catholics had to share it with Reformed Protestants.  This critical situation derived from the forced cohabitation of Catholics and Protestants became even harsher in 1579, when a landslide partially destroyed the church. After several years of decay, the church was rebuilt in 1644 by will of the new priest Carlo Rusca - Nicolò Rusca's nephew - the church was rebuilt and completed in 1668. Next to the church there is the ancient Oratory of Saint Charles founded in 1689. The liturgical celebration occurs on May 1st.
